What is the government's job?

I saw Clomiphene citrate Lasix for dogs for men this quote Meloxicam vs ibuprofen while perusing What is acyclovir the news today.  Nancy Pelosi was speaking about the California court upholding the gay marriage decision and somehow threw this little bit in there:

“…voters are “tired of people who will take you to war and get you involved in (these) cultural battles. … They want to know: ‘Are you getting me a job?’”

I have only one question.  When was it ever the governments responsibility to get me or anyone else a job?  Does she really think that it is her job to secure a job for someone other than herself?  I hope she doesn’t because it’s not.
