We Live in a Burning House

“ Democracy is Ally carter Metformin 850 mg book 5 a device Prometrium 200mg - 90 pills that ensures Coreg 25mg - 60 pills we shall be governed no better than we deserve.”

–George Bernard Shaw

Here we are, on the verge of financial collapse as a nation.  The government is attempting to shore up weaknesses in our economy.  Billions are flowing from Washington to these financial institutions.  Where does it stop?  The auto makers have their hands out now as well as several states.  Because of the current atmosphere in America, one of consumerism and selfism, these measures may help in the short term.  But the long term looks even worse now.  We have long spent more than we bring in.  Our economy rests on a large cloud of debt.  Unsustainable debt.

Here is an analogy I thought of while in the shower.  (The shower, by the way, is a great place to think.) Let’s imagine that a large house is burning.  The fire started on the bottom floor and the supports that hold up the floors above it are weakening because of the flames.  There are people on the top story and they are oblivious to the fire consuming the structure below them.  Firefighters show up.  The people, noticing the fire, yell down to the firefighters to save the house before everything they own burns.  The firefighters job is to put out the flames but they do something unexpected.  Instead of pulling out hoses to fight the fire or helping the people in the burning house, they pull out large wooden columns and rush into the house.  They begin to systematically put these columns up to support the structure that is already incredibly weakened and burning.  They come back outside and marvel at their handy-work.  They have successfully propped the structure up, ensuring that it stands for a little longer allowing the people up above to feel that their house is safe.  But not for long.  All the firefighters have done is add more fuel to the fire.  As the wooden columns begin to burn the fire becomes more intense and the house goes up in flames and collapses in an even more grandiose way than it would have if the columns had not been added.

You cannot shore up an economy that is burning up with debt by adding more debt.

We have in place a government that is doing exactly what the firefighters in the story are doing and we have a nation full of people who don’t want their possessions to burn.  The quote above says it all.  We have elected a government that we deserve; one that will make sure we are comfortable a little longer but will burn in the end.  Think of it like an earthquake.  As tectonic plates catch on each other pressure starts building.  The longer the release of pressure is delayed the greater the destructive force will be.  Once our nation has financially stretched itself too far it will break.  Putting off that break will only add to the pressure and the earthquake will be even more destructive.

What do we do?

  1. Fire the 'firefighters' and replace Diclofenac gel them with robots. Robots with Buy Moduretic Online water hose Levothroid 50mcg - 120 pills arms and fire-proof titanium bodies. And jet packs.Wait, what were Keftab 250mg - 60 pills we talking about?Seriously though, haven't any of these politicians heard the First Rule of Holes? "First Rule of Holes: When you find yourself in one, stop digging." The problem is, of course, that politicians are in the business of fixing problems – they are in the business of placating noisy people. Placating people is always a short-term answer. Truly effective measures are almost always long-term.I'm afraid the only answer to the dilemma is unpalatable to most Americans. We need to raise taxes (ugh!) AND eliminate short-term solution spending (especially huge-ticket items like War, Bailouts, Social Security, etc.) AND invest in long-term solutions like renewable energy, space exploration, and infrastructure improvements. Can you imagine the outcry if Washington announced that no one not already receiving Social Security would never receive it BUT everyone has to continue paying into SS until the last payee has died? That's the sort of drastic cuts that need to be made. On the other hand, long-term projects like fusion power and a smart, distributed electric grid should be receiving the kind of support that poorly-managed banks are getting instead.I'm not optimistic that any of our politicians have the courage to suggest those sort of changes, and even less optimism that they would find the support to make it happen. I certainly hope I'm wrong, time will tell. In the meantime, each of us can do things to help like reducing our own energy use and proper management of our personal finances.
