Sacred Marriage: In Retrospect

Lacey and I have now officially completed the Sacred Marriage study.  I am so thankful that we went through this study at such an early time in our marriage.  I am confident that God will use what we learned to strengthen our marriage and, more importantly, draw us closer to Him.  I would highly encourage ANY couple, no matter how long or short you have been married, to take this class.  Here are some of the things I took away from it:

  • Communication: Lacey and I went into marriage with what I thought was a pretty good communication foundation.  What I found in this class was a different kind of communication.  It made us talk about things that either we had never thought to talk about or just didn’t want to.  I am trying to think of a way to continue this apart from the class so if you have any ideas please share them.
  • Community:  The time we spent with other couples was invaluable.  Hearing what other people who had been where we are now and beyond could not be replaced.  Reading the book on its own would be a good thing to do, but having these other people to interact with made it so much better.
  • Refocusing: One of the themes that ran through this study was to show that the point of marriage is to draw closer to God.  When you are in the day to day it is easy to loose sight of the forest for the trees.  It is easy to just do the marriage thing and lose sight of its purpose.  This class reminded me of why we are married: to help mold us into the people God wants us to be so that we can serve Him.
  • Affirmation: There were several times throughout the study that we were able to say, “We do that” or “That’s the conclusion we came to also”.  I am not suggesting that we have everything figured out, not by a long shot.  But it was nice to hear affirmation of some ideas and decisions we had already made.  It helped us feel that we were, at least, going in the right direction.

Through this study we have drawn closer to the Lord and, as a product of that, drawn closer to each other.  Again, I want to stress that if you are married, at any stage, you should take this class!  It would be well worth your investment of time.
