I wonder if the survey didn’t play upon the gray areas by treating, for instance, Christian and Catholics as different religions. In that case I would say that Catholics, while errant in many teachings, preach Christ crucified as the way to salvation and thus can lead to eternal life. They might call this a belief that different religions offer the way to eternal life.
That said, the effect of multiple coexistent religions is rather difficult, and I think it makes the necessity for deeply understanding Christianity much more important. I wonder how much of the “change” is the result of true erosion in teaching, and how much is the result of people who don’t know their theology suddenly having to confront decent and likable people of all faiths.
