Usually I have a couple weeks notice.  I am able to select songs, figure out how I want to do them.  There is time to pray and meditate over what the Lord wants the service to look like.  I get to meet with our pastor and get an idea of where the sermon is going so I can support that through song the best I can.   I have time to practice the songs and get ready to bring them to the worship team, ready to give direction on how the service will play out.  Then we practice on Wednesday night and then again Sunday morning before the worship service.  Then there are the nervousness that creeps in.  The point is this:  there is a lot of time and preparation that goes into the music portion of the worship service.  I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for our worship pastor who does this on a weekly basis.

I gave you all that information so that you could understand just how faithful God was to me this past Sunday morning.  When He throws you in the fire you can be sure that it is for refinement even though it is uncomfortable in the moment.

Here is how Sunday morning went down.  The first thing to take note of is that our worship pastor’s wife had just had a baby the past week and his family had been sick so he didn’t have much time to prepare things.  My phone rang at 7:40 AM.  It was the pastor of our church.  Our worship pastor is sick; too sick to get out of bed.  They need someone to step in and lead worship.

Keep in mind that this is three hours before the service is about to start, so all of the normal preparation time I would have is out the window.  For this thing to go well at all would be a work of the Lord.

I said yes.  Into the fire I go.  Praying starts.  There is a flurry of motion as I get ready to be at church by 8:00.  I get to church and there is music on the stage.  We pick some out.  Our pastor comes and prays with us.  We practice for around an hour.  Practice goes remarkably well, especially for a first practice.  My wife and I spend some time in prayer after practice, praying that the Lord will provide us with clarity of thought and that His name would be glorified through our situation.

At 10:30 the service starts.  Everything comes together in a way that could only be from Jesus.  Everyone is able to remember all of the things we practiced.  For me, it was one of the most worshipful times I have had while leading.  I had nothing to hold on to except the Lord.  I didn’t have any preparation to lean on.  My nerves never flared up.  Worship could not have gone better if we had had the normal time to prepare.

When we are weakest, His strength shows through that weakness and people see Jesus instead of us.  That is exactly what happened.  My God is faithful!  This experience was testament to His faithfulness and shows what can happen when we rely completely on Him.  All praise to Jesus!
