Anticipation

Posted at 12:30 pm under The Walk

I love a good movie. It is great fun to watch how all the elements come together to make these stimulating visual roller coasters.  I also love a good book.  I think what I really enjoy is a good story.  So when I hear about a book or movie that is to be released soon I get really excited.  For example, I am a huge fan of the Lord of the Ring movies and books so when I heard that they were starting to finally work on the Hobbit movie I was ready to see it right then.  But it won’t be coming out for a few more years so I have a long time to anticipate its release.

This year has been a year of good movies and good books for me.  The one I am most excited about right now is the Dark Knight.  I was ready to see it before I started reading all of the good press it has been getting in the last couple weeks.  I am also highly anticipating the third book in the Mistborn trilogy coming out this fall.

When I start getting excited about some future release I begin to read about it.  I try to find out as much as possible.  I soak in information.  I think about it.  It is fun to anticipate an event that we want to come.  As a child I really anticipated Christmas. By the time Thanksgiving was over I was in Christmas gear.  I would look through toy catalogs and make list of all the things I wanted.  By the time I was out of school I couldn’t sit still.  I was so excited! I am sure you have things that you anticipate this much as well.

The whole reason I am talking about this at all is that I realized that I look forward with great excitement to many things but I don’t always look forward to Jesus coming back for me with the same anticipation.  The greatest event in history is coming!  I should want to be prepared.  I should want to know as much as I can about it. I should want to see as many people as I can come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior so that they can experience this with me.  And yet I don’t do these things with the same excitement as I wait for a movie to come out.

If we look at the things of this world with such great anticipation how much more should we look to our eternity with Jesus with great excitement?  The anticipation we feel for things of this earth are just an echo of the greatness of Christ and should draw us to excitement about being with Him.
